Law enforcement in Sacramento are working a shooting that broke out on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area while deputies were dissolving an unauthorized event of an estimated several hundred individuals.
How It Started
Deputies first arrived at Howe Park around half past six in the evening after learning of individuals Sacramento park shooting 2026 possibly carrying concealed weapons. After that, a follow-up call was made about an alleged brawl taking place at the location.
Air support scanned the area from the air but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Regardless, it became clear that hundreds of people had come together at the location without any permit or approval.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by positioning themselves around the crowd and issuing commands over loudspeakers ordering those gathered to leave immediately. Nearly 15 minutes were allotted for individuals to vacate.
At the height of the dispersal effort that between 20 and 25 rounds echoed through the night. The barrage of gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Law enforcement immediately began locating gunshot victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
In total, four individuals were found to have been shot. The four individuals — including a female and three males all believed to be in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Emergency physicians confirmed that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, each of the four victims was stable.
Metro Fire Sacramento provided support and helped care for those who had been shot on location.
Evidence at the Scene
The primary shooting scene was confirmed to have taken place along the Cottage Way side of the park alongside the local Home Depot at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators recovered additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Bullet holes were observed in the wrought iron fence adjacent to the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence showed that at least one shooter had been firing southward from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was temporarily locked down for a period of time. Crime scene personnel remained on scene through the early morning hours.
Arrests Made
Information relayed through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a vehicle identified as a Kia was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four suspects were held for questioning. Deputies were en route to collect those detained to return them to Sacramento for further questioning. Video reviewed at the scene showed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
